Introduction
World War 1 started on the 28th of July 1914 and ended on the 11th of November 1918. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his Wife in June 1914 sparked the outbreak of World War 1. It involved the most powerful countries which were divided into two alliances the triple alliance including Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy and the triple entente including Britain, France and Russia. The A.N.Z.A.C's (Australian, New Zealand Army Corps were on the triple entente side.
There were three key concepts that led up to the war outbreak they were:
Nationalism: Nationalism is a sense of pride and love in one’s nation. People come together because they might share a language culture or history. It can unite or divide a region or nation. It was the feeling nationalism that made small Germanic kingdoms to form the German Empire in 1871. A sense of nationalism made Germany and Austria-Hungary cooperate between each other.
Imperialism: Is the policy of one country extending its territory to create an empire, usually for financial and strategic reasons. The main rivals in the race for new colonies were Britain, France and Germany. Britain had the largest colonial empire and France also had many colonies but German barely had any so the Germans tried to block further colonial by France so the Germany had a better chance of winning.
Militarism: Is where countries try to bulk up their army by creating weapons and machinery in order to win the war.
